The contractor left a narrow wedge on one side of the floor - he did not cut any of the other tiles. If he had cut the first by just over one-half the first and last row would have been the same. It looks terrible. I assert that this is the way to lay out a tile floor, anything else is botched. Do you agree???? What can I do?

A picture would help---but in a nut shell--you are right----proper layout would leave no little wedges at the edges.

Has the shoe molding been installed yet?

Kind of a new guy mistake-----where did you find your tile setter?

A simple calculation would have prevented your mess. I use an app for the iPhone called TilePro. You just enter your tile width, grout width and width from wall to wall and it instantly calculates the widths of your tiles at the walls....which should be equal. Also gives you a starting point where to begin laying your tiles so you end up with an equal distance at the walls. Works like a charm.
