All my supply boots have black insulation on the interior side. The are catching a lot of dust & dirt. A family member has allergies & this dust being able to enter the home is causing problems. Can I remove the insulation so I can keep this area free of dust?

That won't stop the dust. The dust is already in your house. And some may be pulled in through a leaky return system. Fix your return ducts. make suer no air is bypassing your air filter.

Yes, we are checking R/A . Do the boots need the insulation?

Are they in the ceiling. the insulation helps to prevent condensation from forming when the A/C is running. Also helps to prevent heat loss in heating mode.

Mastic is not an insulation.

vacuum the dust off of the insulation. And fix the dust problem in the house. All that dust you see on the insulation, is dust that was/is already in your house. And the insulation stopped it from going back into the house.

I checked air handler. The foil back on the insulation has deteriorated & is coming apart. (this is an old house). This seems to be where the dust is coming from. Where do I get replacement insulation for air handler & what is it called?
