hello everyone.

The wife and I just bought an old house and decided to repaint the ceiling in the basement. I used medium-adhesion blue tape to protect the walls which were already painted with what appears to be latex, and did so successfully - except for the part were when we removed the blue tape, it peeled away rather sizable chunks of the old paint job from the walls.

My question is, how can this be avoided in the future? We are obviously now going to have to repaint the walls but are apprehensive to do so for fear of peeling away the freshly painted ceiling when we tape it off.

Any suggestions as to why the paint peeled in the first place and how to avoid it from happening again?

To paint a wall, there is absolutely no need to tape your ceiling. Just take care not to whack the roller into the ceiling, and promptly clean up if you have any accidents.

As to why the wall peeled? Probably insufficient prep for the existing wall coat and/or a poor-quality wall paint.

when u take off the tape after your done painting..depending on what type of surface it is and what type of paint you used it will peel off the paint..u wud just have to go very slow when peeling off the tape..or learn how to cut in so u wont need the tape

very good chance the old paint just isn't adhering well and no matter what you use you will get peeling. However, what blue tape did you use? Did you use 3m or an off brand? If you used 3M, I would imagine you used the regular 2090? You could try the 2080 line - with the orange label. Much better for smooth delicate surfaces. If it still peels, than you can use duct tape for that matter because any tape is going to peel the paint off =)

So I have a follow-up.

What will be the best method to approach painting the walls? Someone said I should not have to tape off the ceiling but how will I then paint the corners without getting paint on the ceiling? Sorry if these questions sound stupid. I am new to the DIY game.

Search on YouTube for videos on "cutting in". Basically, you need a 2 1/2" Purdy, Wooster, or Corona brush, a steady hand, and knowledge of the technique you'll find on those videos.
