Birds and Power Lines

What this called?

I have birds nesting in it- almost all year round. My car is parked directly below it and I have a tenant parked directly behind me (also underneath the lines). Because of this impromptu 'bird house,' I get about 10 times the normal bird activity on my power lines. That translates into 10x the droppings, which, in turn, results in 10x the damage to our cars.

I'm fully aware that parking your car outside is going to shorten the life of it's paint job and no matter what you do, it will get crapped on, but this is just a constant bombardment.

When we called the power company, they told us:

1. The 'box' has to have openings/can't be shut.

2. There's nothing they can do about the birds nesting in it.

Are all of these things inhabited by birds? Have they been upgraded/become less bird friendly over the years?

I don't think those are power lines. I believe they are phone/telecom/fiber assemblies, with the cable TV above them, and the power (if present) at the very top.

Yup. That's telco.
Don't know the exact name but that is a telco tap box. It is where they connect the individual drops to each house from the main trunk cable.
That's telco equipment that hasn't been closed properly. Probably the cover hinges are broken, so some bright young man covered it over with a rubber sheet to keep the wire and the birds dry.
Birds are pretty cleaver! Eh!

(25 years of telco service)
Haha, hey just be glad the birds aren't nesting in the outside wall of your house! I just bought a house back in April and finally the birds have moved out of TWO nests in the outside wall which just happen to be in the master bedroom wall (my room). For the time being I just covered the holes up with blocks of wood, and eventually will be replacing all the rotting wood siding. That is of course when I have some more money to spend and the time to do it.
