We have a laundry closet that is a bifold door - it's flimsy, keeps on falling off, and my wife's so frustrated with it that she's done with anything bi-fold.

We'd like to convert the closet into a french door opening.

I'm somewhat stumped here - would love help from someone that could take a look at these photos and advise me what I need to do. One side of the closet appears like it could be framed pretty easily, but the other side not so much (see the third photo below).

I am a pretty new DIYer but I'm also trying to figure out if I can possibly tackle this thing myself or if I really do need to hire someone. I'm fairly competent with the DIY projects I've done thus far and have started to invest in books etc to learn more.

Any feedback/help would be greatly appreciated!

The left side will need to have the drywall removed to expose the framing--on the right side the jamb will be installed over the drywall---

Most lumber yards will make up the double door set as a prehung unit--this will make the job a lot easier than building your own jamb and mortising in hinges and drilling in the ball catches --
If you want to build your own jambs--we will help you.

Just want to point out that the Rough opening height of a Bifold door is an inch shorter than a swinging door, so be prepared to either move the header up an inch (lots of work) or cut down the height of the swinging door.

Is there a consideration to put bypass doors in?

Untill you decide what to do and want to have the bifolds stay check your RO. A rough opening for a bifold should be 81 1/2" X 1 1/4" -1 1/2" wider then your slab.

The more crucial here is the 81 1/2". If to big you'll max out your hardware and become week and prone to fall out. If so you can skip a block under the bottom hard ware so as to be able to turn up the bottom adjuster. You could lier your top track and install a small valance moulding to cover up the visible track if need be.

Lastly when bifolds in desired position remove set scews in the pivot mount at the top in the track a drive in a screw long enough to grab the framing above.

I am not a big fan of bifolds myself but with these steps taken I can pretty much garrenty the bifold will stay were you put it.
