Hi,
New to this forum .
Just got my new security camera survillence kit and I would like to install some of the cameras on the outside of my home. I have a general Idea of the locations on where the camera's will be placed.

I would like to know what would be the best way to get the ethernet cables from outside to the inside to my home. My home is brand new and is a typical wood frame construction. I have checked with the builder and he said that that the outside studs are 2x6.
* what kind of drill bit should I use? I have drywall on the inside and OSB sheathing + some kind of cement/wood siding on the outside.
* should I drill through the studs or through the OSB + insulation + drywall.
* what kind of sealant I should be using. ?
* would I have any issues with the outside wall insulation?
* should I drill from the outside - in or inside-out?

any other suggesstion will be highly appreciated.

Not sure where you are located, but generally the best bet would be to drill from the basement if you have one. Find a point of reference like a window or something and check both inside and outside for any obvious obstructions.

Do you have an attic area that can be accessed? If so, you can find a good place to run the wire through by observing the unfinished side of the framing. This will also allow you access to the backside of the ceiling drywall to help assist with fishing the wire through to the inside.

some security cameras are mounted under the roof eaves onto the soffit.
if you have access to an attic, the cables could be run from the outside into the attic.
from inside the attic your cables can run to their respective location. (ie: the monitor/recoding device)

I never have been to the attic but took a peek into it through the access door . there was ~ 25"-30" of insulation material all around. felt like a big snow fall..
I like the idea of getting the wire fished through the attic because the builder already has installed a ENT tubing from my on-q box to the attic to the crawl.

However, I am bit tense walking around in the attic.
Any tool I could use to walk around with such thick insulation.

How do I fish the wires from the soffit to the attic. is there some opening if i drill a hole in the soffit?

After drilling a hole in the soffit, you can poke a piece of still wire up into the attic and locate this. Then tie the cable to the stiff wire and pull it back through the soffit. Navigating through the attic can be tricky. You will have to walk along each truss or ceiling joist. If you move slowly, you can find each one with your foot before putting your weight down. The spacing is usually consistent, so finding each one is pretty easy.

Here's my outdoor cam setup.... ran the ethernet through the wall from inside above the ceiling to a weather tight box outside. From the box to the cam with watertight plastic housing as specified in the cam manual. All mounted up with SS tamper resistant hardware.

I use 1' x 8' pieces of ½" plywood to work in attics with insulation.

What Bob said. Just make sure it is not 1/4" plywood. Use 5/8" or better.

Tamper resistant except for the plastic wiring cover. Might consider conduit for cut-resistance.

BTW, someone used the wrong sized joist hanger I believe.
