Best paint/primer to use when painting interior doors black.

I am obsessed with the look of black doors. I am about to start this project and I am not sure if I should use a tinted primer under to start. I also am not sure what sheen to use. I do not like the look of gloss. I was thinking a satin maybe? I need some advice, thank you!

As long as you know black is going to show every speck of dirt and hand prints.
A gray tinted primer will work.
If you use an enamel paint it will have a much tougher finish.

I hope your not planing on selling this house any time soon.

Thanks for the advice. It actually hides fingerprints and dirt opposed to the white boring doors. Also it adds a lot of character to a home. I was simply asking about the paints/primers so I do thank you.

Satin is a good choice- but know that means different things to different paint mfgrs.
Might be worth going into a couple of places like Sher Williams ,
Benj Moore, depending where you are might be good local paint co's and get a qt of what they recommend and test to see what has the look you want.
Black covers great, and you will need to prime ( assuming raw?) and at least 2 coats. A grey will barely make a diff in coverage.
There are not as many premixed blacks as once was. But that is the way to go.
And don't use Behr.

You say don't use Behr? I have used Behr through out my house..oops, do you have recommendations for paint brand then? I have access to many different stores that see Benjamin Moore and Sher Williams. Should I use one of these brands? Thank you!

BJ is right, get a factory mixed black. SW has a nice satin black latex finish, factory mixed, called All Surface Enamel. Store mixed blacks can't achieve the depth, the blackness, of a factory mix, and they don't cure as hard. It's a shame that's the way we're going.
Black doesn't need a primer. In fact, it's been my experience that they look passable after only one coat, even over white.
Two coats of black oil gloss over white semi gloss.

If you use the All Surface, try to avoid excessive handling for about two weeks. Handling it will leave white marks on the finish. If you get them leave them alone. After about two weeks, when the finish has cured, they will wipe off with a damp rag and you won't have the problem anymore.
I learned the other day from a BM tech expert on an unrelated situation that they are not finish mars, but skins cells and oil on the uncured surface. When I did wipe them off the black, there was no indication they were ever there.

Thanks, since I moved to the beach, I'm going blond and letting my hair grow out, lol. I'm thinking of joining the crowd and wearing sandals or flip-flops on the job. The whole Jimmy Buffet nine yards. I just though I should have my customer sign a release to put her pic online.
