I'm going to be doing wainscotting in my stairway next week and other white projects so I need a good quality gloss/semi-gloss that can go on natural wood (pine and birch), PVC, hardboard, and maybe a couple stripes on a different wall. Has to be able to handle traffic because it seems like everyone touches and kicks the walls in the stairs for some reason. I just painted them two summer ago and I might have to do it again :vs_laugh:

I was planning to do a light sand (320 grit?) and do a primer coat on the PVC. Anything else I should think about doing to the material prep-wise?

It occurs to me that I should mention I can't spray because its too cold out for proper ventilation.

I'll be hand rolling these, probably on wall since I've got some but joints to paint over.

Oh and I was going to use Kiltz primer on the pvc parts.

Skip using Kilz, its a low quality brand. Basically everything else is superior.

Clean and light scuff PVC with 180-220 grit paper, remove dust. Prime with Stix or BM046. Paint with ScuffX, Cabinetcoat, or Advance.

Raw wood needs to be sanded 150-220 then primed. Personally I would use 046 and ScuffX for everything.

I've switched over to BM Fresh start primer after my painter showed me just how good this stuff was and how it will stick to just about anything and near impossable to get off.
One coat and it looked like just like he'd done the finish coat.
I've found Kilz's about as useful as trying to prime with thinned down milk.

OK, Joe, I will take your word on it.

I have some PVC trim board to paint. I know there are better bonding primers for PVC, but Fresh Start is what I have laying around already. ( BM K046 is the product number, which seems to be what Cocomonkeynuts suggested too)
I have painted PVC board before, without a primer, with good quality paint, and it seemed to stick fine, but I don't have many years of observation on those.
Its a light color, but very visible location, so want it to last.
