I've done 2 kitchens recently with painted cabinets with good success. My suggestion is look for paint shades that are available in sprays. Valspar in particular offers many colors in spray form.

Get a gallon of traditional paint for the cabinets and a can of spray for ever 4-5 doors you need to do. You have to take the doors off anyways, so spray those. Use a satin white primer for light colors, possibly a satin black for darker colors. Scuff sand them lightly, then apply the primer, followed by several light even coats of color. When I did mine I left a hinge screw in each door and strung then up with twine from my garage rafters so I could paint the whole door at once. The boxy built in cabinets themselves are easilly painted with a small roller.

This makes your job a lot easier, and eliminates both potential visible brushstrokes as well as that tacky feeling you get with painted cabinets.

Be aware as others have said, the grain will show through. I would also only do this on low to mid grade cabinets. Higher grade ones deserve refinishing. If yours are solid wood and are quality, consider refinishing even just the lower or uppers if you are dead set on painting or don't want to put the effort in. You can achieve some cool looks with a mix of painted and stained cabinets.

I can't imagine any reason you'd want a satin finish over a flat for a primer.
Sorry I'll clarify this.

When I bought my color of spray paint, I decided to stick with Valspar for priming rather than mixing paint brands. They didn't offer a Flat option in their tinted spray colors. Just a Satin.

A Flat spray paint would be best, you may have to go to a different brand though.

I guess my reading comprehension needs some work.
