Oak is timeless. The color you choose for your cabinets will be outdated long before the bare wood look will be.

Every time a piece of oak is painted, a woodworker somewhere in the world cries a little.

I don't know, I've always disliked the heavy grain of Oak. If the cabinets were maple, I might consider leaving the natural wood. I'm also replacing a couple door fronts with glass and even adding a chalk board on the side of one boxes. It will have a very modern look to it. If styles change, I'll be doing something else later on...

TroyB, you do realize that you can get them refaced. As for Pinterest and what is the know in thing. Take it with a grain of salt. Too many whack jobs on that app, that do not have a clue what is in or out.

If you want to give your wife a berating. Just have her watch a few hours of rehab addict. Then maybe she will realize she is going about this the wrong way.

I've had really good results with Valspar Duramax and Reserve. Lowe's is definitely not my paint store but Duramax and Reserve are good acrylic paints.

You do realize the heavy grain will show through paint as well unless extra steps are taken to fill it. I'm working on a set of oak cabinets now that are getting grain filled, painted and glazed. There are a few different ways to fill the grain, but just paint won't do it. Btw, I don't like oak either.

Now you have me confused. The cabinets have a very smooth, gloss finish with a heavy grain pattern. I plan on using a deglosser, primer, and a good paint. What is going to show through?

Another vote for leave them alone.

If you must do **something** then try this:
Open the doors.
Lay green masking tape on the face frames.
Close the doors and see how it looks.

Try a different shade or even paint on the paper tape.
A year from now you can try a different color.
Two years from now the paper tape can be removed and no harm done.

The grain pattern of the oak.

I don't mean to say it looks bad, just don't expect the grain to disappear with painting alone. It still shows through when your up close.

Be careful using deglossers. If you're planning on using a water-borne primer such as Zinsser 123 don't use a deglosser at all. Scuff sanding is the way to go.

(Novice here) That is a dated style cabinet. Oak is timeless, but those cabinets are not timeless at all, unless grandma's 80's country kitchen is the look you want. Maybe a darker stain, but re-staining that seems like a monumental task. I have seen people paint their cabinets with latex (green though??? odd) and while it does look nicer, they always seemed sticky and the paint rubs off unless you religiously use the handle/knob instead of grabbing the sides. I think there are solid enamels (harder shell) with satin (flatter) finishes that would be best for hard wood, but I'm a novice here. It just seems to me people overuse the "housepaint" rubbery latex. Enamels like what's on picture frames crack I guess.

Keep in mind that you're getting a lot of derision here because lots of wood workers and painters hate the idea of covering up good woodwork with paint. Myself included. However, some people disagree and that's fine. It's your stuff, if you want it painted that's your choice.

A friend of mine and I got hired once to paint an absolutely beautiful set of incredibly expensive oak bar stools. We wanted the work, but it was absolutely painful to apply primer to these things. After the primer, it got a little easier but we still complained about it until we were finished and returned them to the owner who now loved them.
