Hi, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. In my back corner of my house, in my backyard, is our egress window. Directly above it is the end of my gutter that sometimes overflows in super-heavy rain. It's also the only non sloped part of my backyard so it gets muddy and sloppy during rainy season.

It's right next to foundation do nothing with big roots; plus there's a big 4ft eave and also a large oak tree that extends overhead... so wet, shady, not much sun, and no big roots.

What shrubs or plants can I put there? Also, how can I stop the erosion?

Are the gutters clean? You indicate "gutters overflow" and "oak trees overhead", so that would be item #1 to check. This must be done seasonally.

I'd get the water sorted out first before working with plantings. If there is a lot of mud and water you're just going to be drowning the plants and complicating the remedy. You might consider using stone for erosion control. You might also consider an extension to your downspout to move the water farther from your foundation.

It helps if you can put your general location in your signature.

Put in larger gutters or keep the ones you have, clean. Re-grade the area so water flows away from the house.

Yes, thank you. I normally clear my gutters when every leave has fallen off the tree, this time I did it when it was 90% clear hoping that would work. But, it seems the last 10% was still enough to clog the drain. Lesson learned.

I will add more soil and maybe try grass seed again (it's a wet and shady area, seed might just wash out); and then try stone erosion control around the worst part.

What do I do; just throw any large brick sized stones in random area that I don't want to get muddy and wash away; or are there certain stones and/or a specific way you have to do it? I know zero about how to do it and was curious.
