Hello,

I am planning a 25'X16' deck. I would like to place my posts 11' apart. This would = 3 posts for each 25' span. To accommodate this span, I will need to use (3) 2X10 beams. My plan is to attach the beams using USP post cap connectors. The question I have is this:

How do I go about splicing the 3 2X10's since I have a 25' span for the beams? Can I essentially cut the beams into (2) 12.5' spans and butt them together on top of my middle post?

Why not just buy 3- 26 foot ones and have one solid beam after bolting them.

A butt joint will eventually pull apart and be weak / unsightly.

or maybe get some 8 foot ones and some 14 foot ones and make yourself a T & G joint.

P.S. an 11 foot span between posts is stretching the normal limits.

How you do the splice depends on what code you are building under. Your local building inspector will be happy to discuss code issues with you. In my town, we operate under the Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide ( http://www.awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/dca/AWC-DCA62012-DeckGuide-1405.pdf ). The guide requires that all beam splices be done above a minimum 6x6 post, and the most common way to do the splice is using a bracket as you discussed. See figures 3 and 4 for diagrams of beam splices over a post. But your code may be different.

where in earth is anyone going to find a 26' long pc of 2x10.. it just doesnt happen unless its special ordered and by luck you have some very good connections at a mill.

as for splice locations if your only using 3 posts you pretty much have to locate all three over the middle post. however it can create a hinge point. i would consider adding a 4th post that way you can stagger the joints which can make for a stronger beam. still go with the post to beam connectors though
