Hi,

Here's what I would like to do in my basement. There were rough drains put in when the house was built for the toilet, shower, and vanity sink for a future bathroom. I would like to put in a utility sink (future bar sink) on the other side of the wall from the future vanity. It looks like the vanity sink drain is vented, and the toilet and shower are sharing that as a wet vent. I've seen different opinions, so I appreciate your input. Is it allowable for the utility sink to share the wet vent with the bathroom group drains? Obviously that would be my first choice.

If not, what are my options for venting the utility sink? Is it possible to share the drain, but separately vent it? The basement is still unfinished so can I vent it out the side of the house? If not, can I tie into another existing vent?

I can put up to 4- 1 or 2dfu fixtures on a vertical wet vent. Doesn't matter if it's a bathroom group

I would like to do it by code, because I have a permit and will have it inspected by the county. I'm in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Your under IPC so your mine.....

You would need to cut the floor and install the utility sink downstream of your bathroom wet vent. That means you need your 3 inch pipe. Ignore Eplumber he thinks a common vent is a wet vent.... I know it's terminology.

Do you have any plumbing stacks laying around that pick up upper baths?

909.1 Horizontal wet vent permitted.

Any combination of fixtures within two bathroom groups located on the same floor level is permitted to be vented by a horizontal wet vent. The wet vent shall be considered the vent for the fixtures and shall extend from the connection of the dry vent along the direction of the flow in the drain pipe to the most downstream fixture drain connection to the horizontal branch drain. Each wet-vented fixture drain shall connect independently to the horizontal wet vent. Only the fixtures within the bathroom groups shall connect to the wet-vented horizontal branch drain. Any additional fixtures shall discharge downstream of the horizontal wet vent.

BATHROOM GROUP. A group of fixtures consisting of a water closet, lavatory, bathtub or shower, including or excluding a bidet, an emergency floor drain or both. Such fixtures are located together on the same floor level.

I assume nothing else is vented on that bathroom so the short answer is no.

Could you draw all piping locations floor drains like a mini plan and what you want to do?

The issue you have is the fixture load. A utility sink is much bigger then a lavatory sink. That would be a code violation so I would suggest you talk to your inspector and determine if he will allow the variance.

I can't speak for him. We do not allow it in my area.

Thanks Ghostmaker. I talked to a county inspector this morning, and as you said, I cannot share the utility sink with the bathroom drain. I will need to break the floor and tap into the 3" downstream of the bathroom group drains - not a real big deal, but more work than I was hoping for. I was planning to break concrete anyway to move the toilet drain a few feet over so a little more jack hammering than I had planned. Thanks for your help guys!
