Start at the bottom or you can start from the top installing your risers and work your way down, install the treads after the riser. Glue all edges where wood touches wood and use a good construction for the tread to stringer. Hand nailing use 10d finish or you can use trim screws. A nail gun use 2 inch nails.

My contractor made Temp Basement Stairs and now I have to finish with Pine Threads and Risers , What should I use nails or screws and what type?
Does the Risers go on first then the Stairs ? Do I start from top an work my way down. This is one of many first time projects I have to do wish me luck.

My temp stairs are build with walls going down to a door to the basement, I thought you just pop off the Threads and replace with new pine Threads and Risers but what if I had to add a Skirt board?
The stringers were suppost to have a 2 X 4 as a spacer on the outside of them where it goes againt a wall to allow room for the skirt and the sheetrock to slip in behind it.
Sheetrock goes in first, skirt then the risers and treads.
I disagree with where to start. I always start at the bottom and work my way up. Reasons being, that way I have a place to sit while working and a something to walk on when going to get and cut materials.
If there's anyway you can get your hands on a 12" sliding mitre saw do it.
Sure makes it a lot easyer to cut the treads in one swipe.
When ripping the treads to width set the table saws blade at a very sight angle. This will minumize the wood to wood contact so the tread will fit tighter.
I only use constrution adhesive when attaching, not glue. I predrill a pilot hole and use galvinized finish nails, reason being the rough finsih on the nails holds great.
Before doing anything make 100% sure those stringers they threw in there meet code for width, run and rise and number of them.
There's been dozens of posters on here asking how to fix all the gaps, make the stairs stronger, get rid of squecks, make them to code after there already done.

Joe pretty well nailed it. If the stringers are against the wall now, instead of spaced out, you can make a template and cut the skirt to fit the stringer.
I notice there is a "2x"4 on the side of the stringers with the gap between the sheet rock and the stairs. The treads are temp with 2 nails each the stringers are to code , they had to be redone for building inspection . Does the Skirt Board get screw on to wall to each stud then cut each thread and risers to fit in? is like a "1/4 or "1/2 inch board?

Joe a 1X6 won't work for a skirt, I always used a 1X12. Cutting a skirt isn't that hard, some are a little more work than others though. If you need help with the skirt let us know.Were going to have a picture to make sure were all on the same page.

You can nail the skirt to the studs, that way you won't have such large holes to fill.
