I want to finish the basement in my home for more living area. My question is my home was built with engineered joists. I cannot figure out what to secure the top plate to when I start the framing. There is a 6" gap between the wall and bottom of the truss.

To the bottom of the truss cords. If running perpendicula to the truss and not under the truss, bridge the truss with 2x lumber.

First time I've seen the cords just hanging in the air like that.
Why not just cut a block that's the lenght you need from the bottom cord to the wall then attach it with a 2x4 laying on top of the cord. Just predirll the holes in the cord so it will pull down instead of being pushed up as the screw goes in.

Put a short 2x4 on edge along the side of the bottom cord- the bottom flush with the bottom cord- extend it to where you want. Your new top plate can now attach to it

Are those joists holding load if the bottom is not sitting on anything? Looks really odd to me.

The house was built in 2012, so not sure if it is a new construction method. As far as I can tell the bottom cords are not holding any type of load but are ridged (no movement)
