We moved into a smaller home a year or so ago. The thermostat is poorly placed in that it is set into the outer wall, next to the front door.

The other issue is that it has to be behind a large cabinet that can't really be placed anywhere else. So.

I wonder if there is such a thing as a remote thermostat. I have in mind something I can place better, that will sense the temperature around it, then send a signal to a receiver, installed where our crummy thermostat is, so we can get better performance from our heater.

SoCal, not too cold around here in winter, but sometimes.

Thanks.

I can't really tell from the ads I found (this is what happened earlier and the reason I came to the forum) just what these items do.

I need to put a sensor elsewhere that will communicate with a receiver which is installed where my existing thermostat is. Is the Honeywell you pointed me at that sort of animal?

Thanks.

The KIt is over 300 bucks, but its a nice set up.

The above one. Comes with stat that can mount where your current one is. An EIM that will connect to stat, and to your HVAC equipment, plus a portable remote control with built in sensor. So that what ever room you have the remote in, will be the room that controls temp.

Cheaper? Maybe. Easier said then done though.

Cheers!
Ha, yes, so true!

To the OP:

I had a pretty short overall wire run up to my original stat location, but it involved a between-floors/in-the-wall corner bend that I maddeningly could not get around (though I came sooooo frustratingly close!).

Anyway, those shenanigans ended up pushing me to install a Honeywell Prestige IAQ system similar to the one Beenthere mentions above.

Now, that overall system is NOT cheap, and isn't particularly DIY-friendly to install (honeywell markets it as a "pro install" only system), but after doing my homework and carefully planning out my setup ahead of time (many thanks to this site for excellent tips & steers!), I was able to install it myself just fine, despite being a total rookie at HVAC setup-related stuff.

That was ~2.5 years ago, and I haven't had a single hiccup from that system - all aspects of it have been working flawlessly. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny IMHO.

Good luck!

it will be much cheaper to run the low voltage wire to another location, just locate the thermostat wire in the basement and you can fish it up the wall with probably just drilling a few holes if that...
Thanks for replying. Ah, basements. Did I mention we're in Southern California? Won't find too many basements here.

Pods, you know.

But thinking about it, we have a crawl space about three feet high, unusually high for here. Maybe I can do that easier.

you can always peel back some moulding around a door and sneak the wire behind that up from the crawl space , just drill a small hole down into the crawl space, its just 24v, wont hurt you...just keep the thermostat away from any heat, so the room will heat properly and not shut the thermostat off before the whole room heats..

op did not say if he wanted to spend 300-400 on remote stat ..or if he wanted to try and relocate his existing wires for thermostat relocation....what say you op...
If I'm "OP", I've no interest in paying 3-400 to do this. Hoped something more reasonable would be available.

I think I'd rather try getting getting down and dirty in my crawl space and tackling it like a mensch. :)

for a few $$ in hand tools youll get it done, get a cheap electricians fish tape to slide through the wall or floors after you drill your holes to pull the new thermostat wire...you can do a search on youtube for fishing wire through walls and it will give you a good visual on what needs tobe done..

Yeah, I think it's doable. My crawl space is higher than most. Thanks, all, for the suggestions and the fruitful discussion.

Onward and downward!
