Green board should be fine--However, check the manufacturers spec sheet--that should tell you what backing is approved to use with that product.

Can not do that as I bought the surround panels from Habitat so there are no instructions. I have read I need cement board for tile, but I wondered what to do with surround panels.

As the panels are waterproof--the backer does not have to be---

some tub /shower panels are designed to be fastened to the studs without anything behind them---those will be rigid and have a nailing flange.

Post a picture of the parts that you have ----lots of members have installed panel surrounds---someone will recognize the thing and know the proper way to install it.
