My wife and I live in a small suburb of Chicago with a 3 city lot property.
We recently had some tree's removed due to a carpenter ant problem and are working with a clean slate in terms of the yard space and looking for ideas on how to setup the area / landscape it. I did purchase on an end of season special some outdoor furniture from lowes as well as a pergola to install.

We have one minor issue and the attached photos will explain it all.

1) We have uneven yard space form one of the tree removals
2) Depending on how heavy the rain is we can have water problem

Looking for some advice.

As the old root system rots away your going to find that areas is going to continue to sink.
My first thought is to raise the grade in that area

Looks like you have 4-5 downspouts draining into your yard, if you regrade it may fix it but the water has to go somewhere and next stop could be some bodies basement.

Ayuh,... Lookin' at this picture, it appears the lot pitches down to the left of where yer standin', is that correct,..??

If so, everything above the crossing walkway needs to be pitched to flow Over the walkway,....

Pull a stringline from the grade at the high side, down to the concrete walkway,...
Fill everything below the stringline, 'n water will flow....
of course, if there's a hump, knock it down,... no need for a dam to block the water...

Then ditto the process from the walkway to wherever down to the left in the picture, 'n hopefully safely off the property...
