I have an older house and decided to replace attic lights yesterday. It has the metal boxes and older 2 conductor copper wire with no ground connected to a switch on a different floor.
I am considering two options:
- Installing a GFCI type receptacle at the first box in the feed.
- Providing ground from a nearby box (attic fan) that is grounded properly.
Could you please provide the feedback?

You can not use a ground from another circuit.

If you are replacing lights on existing ungrounded lighting outlets, you do not have to add a ground.

I am also replacing wires and the boxes. And the new lighting fixture comes with the ground wire.

A GFI does not provide a ground.

The ground either comes in the circuit wiring or with a metallic raceway.
