Can anyone recommend an attic door/stairs that is budget friendly and that is sold in either Lowes or HD? I am installing one this weekend but I have read some things about how some are very hard to open. Thanks.

How often do you expect to go up there?
If it's like what most people do (2X a year to get and put back the 3 boxes of Xmas ornaments) then a step ladder might be enough along with a good hatch.

But if you really do intend to use it a lot... don't buy a bargain attic stair.

Never thought about that. We have a tiny hatch in our bedroom closet above the shelf... Sucks. To be honest we will store stuff up there and that's about it. I would say we would go up there about 5x's a year but I do want a more convenient bigger acces than what we have in the bedroom closet. I think a hatch might work. I assume I should still put it in hallway? Any other tips/advice? Thanks a lot.

Make the hatch big enough to stand *in* and flex around while on a ladder.
Plan to lay a half sheet of plywood on each side of the hatch for stuff to sit on.
