I am looking to add some new deck stairs to our deck this summer. They will be off the deck into our yard. First question is how they should meet the ground, I.e. should I lay a small pad of concrete? Also, what is easiest way to attach posts at bottom of stairs to support railing? Thanks for the help!

When you pour the pad for the stairs to land on also dig out and set the railing post in the same pour (like a fence post).

Search the web hard enough and I'm sure someone will give you a solution that doesn't involve a shovel. :laughing:

If you can post a picture of your deck now that sure would help.
I've installed stairs that ended on a beach before and did not need a pad.
But until I see what you have there's no way to know if it will work.

Looking at your yard and the slope of it I'd do a landing and have the stairs come down parallel with the deck.

Where the stairs will be is very flat.... I took a picture of the wrong section by mistake!
