Hi everyone. I just wanted to know if anyone knows what part of the popcorn ceiling contains the asbestos. The paint itself or the little powdery balls in the paint? Someone in construction told me it's in the underlying layer but that doesn't make sense to me. I searched tirelessly online and couldn't find anything.
Thanks in advance.

It was tested positive. I just wanted to know what part of the popcorn ceiling material contains the asbestos. My guess is in the little powdery balls.
I don't know that it ever had paint is was just a mix like mortar that you spayed on the ceiling. Paint would have been done later.

Did you have it tested at a local lab or send it away.
Some of the mail order testers seem to find a little of everything. :wink2:

I had it mailed. Schneider Labs I believe it was. And yes it's not paint but something like mortar like you said. Do you know if the asbestos is in the mortar like stuff or the little ball like things that make the texture?

I would think it would be in the mortar. I have removed it with out dust by spritzing it with water and scrapping it with a wide knife taped to a dust pan.

If it has been painted you may as well just cover it.

I don't know what part of the texture would be asbestos but I would consider it all to have asbestos - both the 'balls' and the mud that holds it together. It would not be in the paint unless it transferred from the texture into the wet paint.
