I just discovered the situation below with respect to our washer and dryer in the basement of the old house we just bought. Funny thing is, the electical outlet that they are plugged into is grounded.

Is there any reason not to dispense with this rather nasty tangle of wires?

if you truly have a grounded outlet, those additional grounds are not necessary

I'm seeing two "somethings" plugged into the duplex receptacle, surely one of them is not a clothes dryer. As stated, if there is a ground within the duplex receptacle, that should be adequate for the washing machine. IF your dryer is a 220V model, then I would suggest you, or someone, check to make sure it has an adequate grounding circuit.
