I have a typical garage door opener remote that clips to the sun visor. I'd like to take it apart and tuck the guts up in the headliner/map light area and have a button wired to another location (in my case, near my left knee).

I don't think it would be too terribly difficult, probably the hardest part for me would be de-soldering the button on the circuit board and wiring up a remote switch. I have very limited electronics experience.

Has anyone ever done anything like this before (taking apart a remote and custom mounting it)?

If that's the old-style remote, the manufacturer probably now offers a compatible compact version the size of a key fob. Most of the space saved is due to use of coin batteries.
It's newish style, and I do have a keyfob one that I could use, but I dont want anything else on my keychain.

I stopped in Ace Hardware on my way home yesterday (not ideal for electronics I know, but it was no out of my way) but they had only one switch that would work but it was ugly and they wanted $7 for it.

I know I could could buy online, but are there any decent B&M stores for little electronics components like that now that Radio Shack is gone?

Haven't done a garage door remote but I have taken a radar detector and put the forward detect and put it in the grill of my 69 Camaro and the rear detect inside the left rear brake light. Put the lights in the interment panel and speaker under dash by right side of steering column. In some states back then radar detectors were illegal so I hide mine with an on/off switch cause when you start your car, it goes through a test and makes the noise. Worked like a charm. In some cars/truck there is a spot just for garage door opener usually in front of rear view mirror.:vs_cool:
