My husband already tried putting in a little strip of drywall. It just crumbles apart when he tries to screw it in. Any ideas? We were going to put vinyl trim all around, but something needs to go in there first. See pictures (sorry about them being sideways; they weren't sideways, but uploaded that way).

Not sure how wide and deep the gap is. It looks to be about an inch wide and maybe 1/4 inch deep? If so, you can cut some hardibacker or cement backer and glue it in with construction cement or gorilla glue. Yes, it will probably have to go in in several pieces. Who cares, if it's only backer for the trim to glue to.

Not the standard way, but it would be waterproof, cheap, and strong.
