One of my competators got the bid to build a 20' tall garage right down the street from me, I lost the job over $100.00 and suggesting he go with a 36" door instead of a 2-8.
We where working on another house almost right across the street so we could see what was going on.
He gets all the walls up but never installed any of the sheathing on the walls.
I see the truck roll up with all the trusses with a crane right behind him.
They went ahead and set all the trusses and quit for the day.
No cross bracing, no sheathing, looked like a stack of cards.
Want to guess what happened when a thunder storm rolled through that night with 40 MPH winds?
The whole thing was one big pile the next day.
The bad part is he had the same thing happen to him before on another job.

Sorry to hear, for the owner's sake. That, unfortunately, is why some of us are reluctant to hire a pro that we don't know. I really pity the folks who don't know enough to at least ask a contractor enough questions to ascertain whether or not the dude (or dudess) knows stink from Shinola. Are you going to go over and bid on the clean up now?:thumbup:

Next time set up a time lapse, when these jokers show up to redo the new garage. Good info, when someone gets injured, and there is proof of poor workmanship available.

Sounds like at least one of the low-quality homebuilders around here. During the Derecho windstorm a few months ago, about half the houses in one of his developments lost some vinyl siding. Guess what? No house wrap to be seen on any of them. My son worked for this guy briefly as a foreman for a framing crew. He quit midway through his first day because he couldn't stand how quickly and sloppily he was expected to work.

We see that type stuff all to often.
I live in what would be concided a high wind area right on the bay.
I've seen homes built with Cellotex sheathing, no house wrap and used 1" nails.
No tar paper under the shingles.
Laps running the wrong way on the siding so the wind just gets under it and rips it off.
No safty chains on the storm doors so the pistons get bent or ripped out of the walls.
Only 3 or 4 nails per shingle with the gun set so the nails blow right through.
No drip edging.
Ledger boards for a second story deck nailed right over the siding, with no lags.
The roof was attached to the face of the fashia.
All this from the same builder.
He's no longer allowed in Mathews county to do anything.

That is about how Construx here in Springfield did their developments in both New Berlin, IL & Riverton, IL. Cheapest homes I have ever seen. Do not even compare to some of the cheapo homes that were done in the 70's as pre-fabs.

The same builder that had the garage fall down was suppost to turn an old service station down town into a car wash.
They for one had no building permit.
It was right in plain site on the main street.
#2 They added an addition to the building on the bank next doors property.
There was a stop order issued, he lost his licence and it was held up in court for over a year.
So much for getting the lowest bidder.

(After the "house of cards" - at least, it was "only" a garage!)!

An assisted living up the street from me was fun to watch being built. There is no sheathing on the walls. They nailed 1/2' foamboard to the studs and hung vinyl siding over that. The roof sheathing is all 1/2' OSB, then shingled. No tar paper. I was watching them build it, the contractor offered me all the leftovers if I would pick them up every night. I got a pickup load of 4x8 1/2" OSB and another of foamboard. Wondering how long before something fails.

I saw a 3,000 sq ft house built with poor corner bracing totally in the dry with roof and cornice ready for brick, moderate wind and the house set down all the way, the roof was intact, just sitting on a pile of crushed lumber.

I guess the craziest thing I saw was a friend of mine working on his daughter's shotgun house. The house had 14 foot walls, and the sheathing was 1X8 run on a 45° angle. Code said he couldn't rebuild if the house was torn down because it was only 5 feet from the houses on each side. He took all the siding and sheathing off the house, no corner braces at all.

He would take a bad stud out and replace it, he did that all the way around the house. He had 4 or 5 men on the roof tearing the shingles off, the house was swaying like you wouldn't believe. When I saw that, I told my friend that he was fixing to kill some folks the way that house was swaying. He asked if I would brace the house for him but I had more to do than I could get to at the time.

I did go back and trim it out for him though, I couldn't believe he couldn't see the house was in such danger of falling.

You must be in one of the places in MO that has no building codes. Or the inspector's on the take.
