After our tenant's exhaust fan went kaput, I opened it up to take a look at it and check voltage

It struck me as odd that the exhaust fan & light each had plugs that went into a built receptacle inside the metal framing. I don't know if I'm describing this right. I went upstairs and opened up the exhaust fan in our upstairs bathroom and see that it also has a plug & receptacle.



I would have thought the fan & light would be hardwired in. Is this usual? And if so, why?

That is pretty common on most newer style fans. Makes it easy to pull the fan & motor assembly out to replace or clean.
