Hi -
Wanted to hear you guys opinion on this one. New construction home, HVAC installer placed the furnace too close to the wall with the electric panel, not respecting the 36 inches code at the state I'm at. City inspector rejected, so they moved the furnace 6 inches away and angled the duct to the supply plenum - pictures attached.

Do you guys think that this would impact the system's efficiency by a good amount? My understanding is that it will impact, but not by a considerable amount.

This is bothering more than it should.

I should mention that it's a big ranch, and the baby room at the opposite side of the furnace is getting very little air flow. I ended up closing most of the duct registers. I can't help but blame it on the angle duct at the furnace, :vs_laugh:

That offset won't affect anything. It is full size at top and bottom.

Only when it reduces does it restrict airflow. I have installed thousands of furnaces with offsets like that and had no issues.

There is still the other issue you mentioned "the baby room at the opposite side of the furnace is getting very little air flow."
Being a new house the air flow to all rooms should have been part of the design and construction. Get them back and fix it. The solution is not "closing most of the duct registers".

Ask for the duct design, Manual D. The house should also have a manual J for heat loss and gain. That is good information for you to have as part of owning a house.

PS, I agree Yuri, that offset will have no effect on air flow.

Those offsets aren’t going to hurt anything.
Running the furnace with most of the supply vents closed will hurt something. That issue needs to be addressed.

I am going to talk to them and see if they would send me the Manuals D and J, but duct design is one thing I don't know much about. Does fixing the farthest room problem require re-design of the ducts? I can't imagine how they would fix it
