I am trying to clean up after a nightmare job by a local handyman. After noticing the rubber washer between the outer drain and the tub, not the shoe and the tub, I unscrewed the outer drain and attempted to place the washer between the shoe and the tub.

The shoe is slightly angled and very close to the tub. When I put the washer in place, it is very tight at the drain side, and slightly loose on the opposite side. Loose enough to move around.

I suspect this will not hold or create a seal and that the drain will have to be redone. I have two questions:

1). Is there a way to fix this without removing the entire drain assembly?

2). My wife told me he requested 5 small tubes of epoxy when connecting the plastic drain he cut when replacing the bathtub. I should be worried, shouldn't I?

Sure. I hope this works, and thanks for your reply. I attached 3 pictures. The first one (3916) shows the overview. The drain is definitely off center, but moves slightly. The second (3920) shows the smaller gap, and 3923 shows the larger gap on the opposite side. I know, not much to see. I haven't ventured into the crawl space to view the epoxy mess yet.

If I position the rubber ring between the shoe and tub, it is snug at the smaller gap, but I can move it in and out at the larger gap. My fear is, when screwing the outer drain into the shoe, it will not seal on the side with the larger gap because it will be snug on the opposite side.

I am assuming that you are placing the ruber washer on top and the washer goes under the tub

Starting at the shoe then the rubber washer, then the tub, then the male piece that screws into the drain.

You may have the wrong design for your application but, between the tub and male piece you install plumbers puddy

Actually, that's what the handyman did. He installed the rubber ring between the male piece and the bathtub.

I'm trying to fix that. Here are two pictures with the rubber ring installed between the shoe and tub. The first one shows where the ring is tight. I can barely move it. The second one shows the opposite side, where the ring is very loose. I can pull it out with minimal effort. It moves around pretty good on that side.

I am just wonder if that is ok or if the loose side might leak when I get this back together, using the plumbers putty.

And then, if he used expoxy on the PVC in the crawl space, should I replace the drain anyway.

Are you saying that you can move the ring when the strainer is tightened or it is loose when the strainer is out.

Just make a roll of plumber puddy about a 1/4" in size and put it on the strainer and tighten. As it get tighter the puddy will squeze out and make a seal.

The pics you have shown is normal because the shoe just help hold the washer in place.

Ok. Thanks for your help. I figured the shoe didn't have to be perfectly parallel to the tub.
