Looking to purchase a 1912 Four Square that is 2800sf. The electrical has never been updated. There is no box. It is all fuses on the back porch. I want to know a ballpark of the price before I make an offer on the house. Any advice? House is located in Memphis, TN.

I'd suggest having three licensed contractors come out and make bids.
Choose which one has the best reputation and if the price is right...Hire away!
You've got a lot of work to be done, find someone who you like doing business with and make the best of it!

The op should realize that ANY price quoted on here may not be anywhere close to what they might expect to pay for services in their area. It is highly discouraged to post prices on this site because people expect to pay that in their local area. I have seen several posts referring to this kind of activity on this site before, though I can't remember where I saw them at.
Though the age of that system is old, it is one of the cleanest installs I have seen! Albeit dangerous the way everything is exposed, but certainly needs to be taken care of and replaced.
I would agree with some of the other posters on here about getting 3 quotes from local electricians. There is no better way to figure out the cost of the work than to get local electricians in to give you an estimate. Ask for references and make sure they are licensed to do electrical work.

And don't pick a contractor just because they're the lowest price.
With electrical, you should be concerned with quality.
Also, with a lot of smaller contractors, you'll have the owner very much involved in the work if not actually doing it. Which usually involves a little better quality, IMO.

I'd be curious to hear what kind of results you get.
I live in a 1917 Foursquare that's about 1700 sq ft, with a crawl space and an unfinished (but has a staircase, and tongue-and-groove floors) attic. I've spoken with numerous electricians and the ones that are interested in the work, generally want to do it as time and materials due to the sheer quantity of variables and potential obstacles.
The prices also varied considerably based on who is responsible for repairing plaster damage.

Never accept any bid that does not include this repair work. Without a complete cost picture you are open to big dollar surprises. Some electricians will cut up so much of the drywall that it will cost more than the electrical work for this repair. Others will do little to no destruction.
