I have looked at many tubs and buyer reviews online, and I still feel lost. What I'm hoping for is advice from plumbers or DIYers on what to purchase and what to avoid. For example, I just read that a drop-in is not a good choice when there will be a shower too, so that was helpful, because I was looking at the Kohler Evolution (good price online).

What I'd like is a soaking tub with water depth of 15" minimum - 17" definitely preferred (chronic pain back and neck, arms and legs). It can be 5' to 6'. I'd prefer a narrow width, as the bathroom is small, and would not like to go over 36" W. No whirlpool or such - just more to go wrong, I'm thinking. Maybe a surround instead of tiling?

Have you found certain brands or specific models preferable?

Certain materials? Is fiberglass alone (gel coating) not advised? Is acrylic reinforced with fiberglass good, and if so, what thickness of acrylic is acceptable (seems they are 3, 5 or 8mm)? Americast? Vikrell? Cast iron expensive and water level not deep enough.

Any advice you can offer will be appreciated.

After cast iron I like the Vikrell the best. Go to the Sterling web site, a lot of choices.

With any types beside cast iron still best to install a mortar bed under tub.
