I just bought a new house and the AC system is confusing me.

The Air Handler does not like to turn on without coaxing. And when it does come on it only stays on for a few minutes. The outside unit however, that will run all day but that doesn't do me much good when the air handler doesn't blow air throughout my house.

Any HVAC people have an idea before I get someone to come out and look at it?

By coaxing, I mean that if I leave it in Auto and the outside unit is running, but the inside unit is not then I kind of move the switch back and forth between auto and on. Sometimes it kicks on in the On position, other times it has to be between those two.

Regardless of where I have it, it only stays on for up to ten minutes while the outside unit will run all day.

The thermostat is really old. I'd say original with the house(1983). The outside unit is from 96 I believe, but the Air handler im told is older and not the match of the outside unit(different manufacturer maybe).

Probably a bad sub base.
They wear out.

Obviously can't say 100%. but good chance its the sub base.

It would help to know what brand and model indoor unit you have.

But, yes. The sub base can have a problem on the fan side and not the part that controls the outdoor unit.

If the thermostat is as old as you say and the indoor fan comes on as stated I would definitely replace the thermostat with a new digital stat.

No more mercury bulbs to worry about.

You will love the new one anyway it tells the exact temperature.

Called the Home Warranty place and they had a Tech come out(was at my house within 30 minutes of calling the home warranty place, 5 minutes from when the company called to tell me he was comming out).

He replaced the relay on the air handler, said it was corroded and there were a couple burnt wires. It was working when he left so should be good now. =D
