Hi there,
My A/C was not working I believe. In Chicago, we just got warm weather a month and half ago, so I switched my thermostat from hot to cold. Air didn't come out cold enough and temp was hanging around 82f. Called air conditioner guy, he said I didn't had enough freon, which he charged in system and it worked. Though I noticed that even upon reaching target temperature, A/C would keep on running until I turn system off. Temperature in Chicago fell again and I turned thermostat to off. Had to go out of town for week and half, therefore left it off. Came back and for system keep on running issue, I brought Honeywell RTH7600D thermostat. My mistake that I should've checked A/C with existing thermostat (RiteTemp 6080), I turned off A/C system and replaced the thermostat and now I'm back to square one, temperature not coming down less than 82f. Unit outside is throwing cold air out as before and not enough cold air inside. Called same guy, he is saying that now A/C needs replacement probably because pistons are bad or something, costing total of $1400.
Feels like I'm getting gypped here. Please help. Any advice or suggestion before we faint in heat! :furious:

You need to be more specific. For starters tell us:

What is the outside ambient temp?
What is the temp of the return air entering the air handler?
What is the temp of the air at the register closest to the air handler?
What is the humidity level of the house?

It sounds like the unit might be leaking refrigerant if it worked OK after the "Gas N Go" repair but has since degraded.

Did the tech. make any attempt to check for a leak?

If refrigerant is ever added to a system to return it to a previous known good state then it has a leak. The leak must be pinpointed and repaired or history will repeat itself.

Yes, outside unit is throwing cold air, not hot air at all!

Temp outside these days is 89f.
Temp as I checked with thermometer by register was 78f
Humidity level is 38.
A/C to the (same) repair guy, he said there's no leak and my freon level is ok. If the freon level is OK and it worked for few days??? I don't know
