Hello and thanks in advance. We have two windows in the front of our house that we want to replace with bigger windows. They are about 51x33 and we would like to get wider ones and possibly longer. Can anyone recommend a quality affordable(is that possible:icon_rolleyes::icon_rolleyes:) brand? We live in NY on Long Island.

I have someone to install them...just looking to purchase.

HiMark, Okna, Softlite, and Sunrise are a handful of the top performing vinyl products. You should have your pick being in NY, however you'll have to find a dealer that sells them for DIY install. Most dealers sell the premium brands "installed" only.

Most of the brands sold in supply houses are not the "top tier". They definitely have solid choices, but the top performers are typically sold through dealer networks. There are dealers that sell to DIY, so I would just research the product first, then contact the manufacturer for a referral to a dealer. Okna/HiMark in particular is just outside of Philadelphia and should have a bunch of dealers in your general area. You can contact them through their website if interested:

THanks. Our two current windows we want to replace dimensions are roughly 51x33 and we would like something a little wider and maybe even longer of possible but if not then def wider by several inches. Our budget is about $300-400 per window. Is that possible for a good window? Obviously not looking for the highest quality but something that has good insulating properties.

Depending on the details, if you make the window larger(wider), you will have to do some framing/altering and possibly a new header over the top. You are just replacing one hole in the wall (old window) with a larger hole in the wall (new window). Since most problems (65%+) with windows come from the installation, make sure the installer is really good and just the normal installer/nail bender. - That is a big hole in the wall with a big perimeter and potential problem areas.

Thanks and i agree. The family friend who will be installing them has been doing carpentry for about 30+ years but has slowed down in the last 10. I know he is not up on the new ideas or materials available. He is a great framer and wood worker...he built out deck and it came out great. I think when it comes t the details and particulars he cuts some corners. Hopefully I can get some "must do's" from people here that I can make sure he does. Like I said he knows how to frame really well but for instance I feel that he does not know the proper way to flash because he has not done it in so long but I'm sure I can also you tube this to make sure I direct him properly. Again he knows his stuff I just want to make sure it is done 100% correct. Me and my wife are new home owners. Thanks

You can definitely get a nice quality window (without installation) in your budget. Obviously option content will have an effect on where it falls, but certainly in the ballpark.
+1 on the other guys comments about the install. Most important items: Get it installed square, and flashed properly so that it is water tight.

Have you looked at Milgard? I spent $7k for 15 windows...some of them quite large....and special. One window is a double casement 4'x5'. All of them fiberglass clad (which means I can paint them) on the outside, vinyl on the inside.
