I am replacing two windows that are roughly 34x56 with one that will be about 40-45 wide. I spoke to a friend of a friend on the phone who does this for a living and he mentioned using new construction windows. He is coming by tomorrow to look and explain. does new construction windows make sense? Thanks ...excuse any typos.. Typing on train and squeezed/sandwiched between two people

#1 Why are you replacing the windows and not just installing replacement wondows.
#2 Why would you want to change the size of the opening. A whole lot more work and expence.
You can get windows made to exact sizes.

We want bigger windows. We have an inline high ranch and they are too small and look funny...two small windows on the front of the house. Geez are we allowed Joe....JK....:laughing:

I always prefer new windows compared to replacrments make sure they r done right new bigger header not just cut bigger hole and install

Yup thanks. Having a problem buying just the window without the install. Looking at the Himark, Okna and softlite but most want you to seel with the install. Wish I knew of a brand that was on par as those that was a cash carry. The Simonton @ HD is install too.

U can try local lumber store and Lowes sells Anderson windows 200 series should be fine depending on budget u can always get higher series windows

I like new construction over replacement windows also. One reason replacement windows don't like window air conditioners.:yes: Its not bad if its a one story house and you can remove your clapboards or vinyl and know how to do finish carpentry. Now if you have central air i would go with replacement.:laughing:

I thought Anderson were crap?? At least what I thought pros say. By the way, are wood better than vinyl? We have wood now and I see that Anderson has a wood line. Thanks

Does Anderson have STC ratings? We live on a busy road

To be honest don't know exact ratings I do most of my window installs on shore line so Anderson is best for keeping weather out so I'm not going to blow smoke up your arse and sag I know i just tried looking on line and most places said to call manufacturer for those specs. I'll try to find out

that is quite the project and will require new headers in the openings for the new size. plan on demo of the entire wall covering (drywall)floor to ceiling in the room the windows are in unless the headers can be added from the outside which really never happens. a trick I learned years ago is to leave as much drywall as possible on the wall up near the ceiling and still be able to put in the header. not having to mud the seam at the ceiling will save a lot of work on the project because if done right all new painting that needs doing is on the walls only and does not transfer up to the ceiling . sometimes though the drywall needs to come off up to the ceiling so...

You can find those products cash and carry, you just might have to work hard to find them. Look up all of the dealers of those products in your area and just ask
Andersen wood windows are decent if you go the wood route (although I prefer Marvin), not a big fan of their vinyl (Silverline/American Craftsman).
