Hello! This is my first post here, though I have searched high and low for an answer to my question. We bought a log home last year. It was built in 2004. It was stained in probably 2005 (upon completion) and again in 2014. Based on the leftover containers in the basement, this is what the original owner used to stain it:

CETOL LOG AND STAIN
HI-PERFORMANCE TRANSLUCENT SATIN FINISH
009 DARK OAK

I was told by the previous owner that they sealed the cabin about every three years with a "maintenance" coat. Described and thin and clear. A Sikkens product. However, I am very confused as to which sealing maintenance coat they used. I have been told it was "Prolux Extol" (which doesn't appear to exist) and "Cetol Maintenance". To complicate matters, it would appear Sikkens is now PPG? They also said I have to use Sikkens on Sikkens, or something to that effect.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which maintenance coat I need to use? It's due this year...

Thanks!

Chris

I would use oil base on oil base. That is just old thinking to avoid compatible paints problems. Also check if old stain has a film? Just by eye. Not a pro.

2 personal examples. Staining old pressure treated deck boards. I used oil base semi transparent, cabot, which I knew does not form a film. About 3 years later, I power washed it and applied a new coat without more preps. Other parts got acrylic solid. Test means just small area but same preps, washing and maybe sanding.

Old vertical t&g siding. Old solid stain was oil based. Don't know the name, although it may be was mcclosky. I washed it and applied 2 coats of cabot acrylic solid stain. That stain is still serviceable after about 2 decades. But the house is not insulated (nj) and dries out very well. If it has vapor problems, maybe not so much.

So if that brand has a maintenance coat, that is what I'd use. If something is making me doubt it, then do a test where it would not be seen and easy to remove, if must.
