I am planning to remove a plastic drain valve from a water heater and replace it with a brass bib.

But last time I tried to remove a plastic drain valve it broke off, and I needed a handyman to help me remove the remains of the valve from the hot water heater threads.

Is there a relatively safe way to remove these plastic valves?

Thanks

I usually remove the handle and have at it with a pipe wrench. Pretty easy if done when the heater is new. And old heater -not so easy. If it breaks off, dig it out with a small chisel and a scratch awl. If You gnarl up the threads run a galvanized nipple in (galvanized because it is harder than brass and will cut threads in the tank brass.)
