I am a (very) beginner/aspiring woodworker and would like to build a wooden case for a particular boardgame I have. I'd like to build something similar to an "artist case" that you can find at hobby lobby and similar, but a bit larger. A couple questions I have are what wood would work well for this, and what type of joinery is beginner friendly but sufficiently strong? Looks like on this box they used finger (dovetail?) joins. I am also familiar with half-lap and mortise-and-tenon joins, but I don't think they would work on thin wood like this.

What tools do you have to work with?This is the biggest concern on what type of joinery you can do.

Lets say I have a miter saw and a table saw.

Well then "lets say " you are limited to a box or finger joint with a home made jig. Finger joints and dovetails are a whole different thing.

clawlan - looks like a fairly simple project for an experienced woodworker and a great project for someone that is learning woodworking. A table saw and a drill should be the only power tools you need to make this case.
