There's different schools of thought on this. For a tub/shower do not use an adhesive, you should use thinset.

The Schluter KERDI system is a popular way to tile bath or shower surrounds. You can get a lot of their stuff at box stores(HD), the rest you can order online or from most tile stores.

Schluter generally always calls for UNMODIFIED thinset, however a lot of tiling guys are also using Versabond thinset (lightly modified) with Schluter systems successfully.

Using the Kerdi membrane provides far better waterproofing/water management than just thinsetting tile to drywall or cement board.
