I had a similar problem with carpet adhesive in one room and the black cutback in another room. I used an adhesive remover for the carpet and a type of portland cement (can't remember product) for the cutback. Adhesive remover and some elbow grease will probably work.

The problem with adhesive remover is that it can soak into the subfloor and not allow adhesion of the new tiles. You can sprinkle on a product like cornstarch or baby powder. That will make the adhesive gummy and then it can be scraped.
