I am installing a new water softener, originally planning to drain it into a nearby floor drain, which feeds into an ejector pit, which contains a sump pump feeding into a horizontal sewer drain. I have read recently, however, the salt water is not good for the pump. Instead, could I add a new drain onto this horizontal sewer line at the same point the sump pump joins it?

I expect it would look like this? Replace the elbow with a T (or sanitary T? or wye?) to connect the sump pump and also connect a standpipe with trap and airgap device.

Is this a good approach? Is there a better approach?

No. I asked about a sink and got my answer. This is for a water softener.

just drain it into the sink, with proper air gap and your done...salt wont hurt the pump..

your not talking large concentrated amounts of salt water, and it will be flushed from the pump area when you use the sink and the other appliances draining into the sump...

if you hook any trap on the exit side of the pump your just going to fill the basement with water, the pressure from the pump will just blow back out the trap you want to put in..

no, your asking for trouble, but its your house....

if your going to cut into a sewer line cut a 4 x2 Y into the main line..right by that cleanout..

What would be the normal way to do this?
I cannot just cut out a segment of the sewer line and add the Y fitting in. It is constrained on both ends, so I cannot move either end to get into the fitting. Would I cut out a larger section and add the Y with unions on either side?

they make slip couplings, no ridge on the inside, lotsa glue and work fast...wear gloves, or a no hub clamp....your choice..
