I want to add an interior wall in an existing room. The room already has drywall on the existing walls and ceiling. My question is, do I have to remove the ceiling drywall in order to attach the top plate of the new wall to the ceiling joists (new wall is perpendicular to the joists). Thanks for any thoughts

NO not usually. mark out your wll location on the ceiling snap your caulk line across the ceiling as a referance point. locate your ceilng beams and cut and install your top plates then bottom plates, ans install your wall studs. Good luck BOB.
