I am doing some electrical work in the third garage, which is a single car space added by the previous owner to the original two car garage. When it was built they connected the single light and three outlets boxes to the circuit in the original garage, which comes from the service panel in the basement and also feeds a few lights and outlets in the house.

The light in the third garage has two three way switches, one by the back door, with the line feed, and the other by the opening to the old garage.

Time ago I had a professional install a 125A sub panel in the third garage, with just two outlet circuits for tools.

What I am doing now, is adding a circuit for six ceiling lamps and another circuit with a new string of outlets. Both circuits out of the garage sub panel.

I have run two 12x2 from panel to a three gang box by the opening to the old garage, with the idea of having in that box the the new light switch, the old three way switch and a GFCI outlet as the head string. From the new box I have run 12x2 to the trusses and to the sockets.

This morning I went to move the old three way switch from the old single box to the new one, a few inches above. I went to the basement panel to turn off the breaker and found that the circuit is now on a double breaker (Multi Branch Circuit with GFCI ?). I am pretty sure it used to be a single breaker, but somehow during the kitchen remodel two years ago, it got converted due to code.

I went on with my business and moved the three way switch to the new box with no problems.

But now I wonder if it is a code violation to have half the multi branch from the main panel in the same box with the two circuits from the other sub panel. In the box I have all the grounds connected together but have kept the neutrals separated by circuit.

Personally I think it should be fine, but I will have it inspected and want it at code.

If the line feed to the three ways was at this box, it would be easy to swing it to the new light circuit, but even then, it might be questionable to mix 2/3x14 wire with the 2x12 in the same light circuit.

What do you guys think ?

This is not a violation.
