I am adding a new ceiling light to a switch that currently controls a switched outlet. I have already unswitched the outlet and am getting ready fish down the new wire from the ceiling light, but seem to think it would be easier to put in new old work gang box and cut out the metal box instead of using the knock out and having to open abaove the current gang box location. My question is, my house does not have ground wires in cable runs, only grounding to each metal gang box; how would I ground the new ceiling light in the ceiling box is old work plastic and the gang box it is attached to is old work plastic? The new wire I ran does have a ground wire running from ceiling to existing gang box.

You said grounded to box? Do you have metal jacket cable?

Why not use a metal old work box with wings?

Just a simple light is being installed, right? With a plastic old work box?

Not using metal jacket cable for the light fixture. The original plan was to ground to the outlet box with a wire nut but it seems rather difficult to fish the new cable from the existing box will properly securing to the metal box at the knockout without opening up above the existing box. That is what I am trying to avoid.

Ok, but is the power source cable metal jacket or conduit?

Does this metal jacket contain a small silver color or aluminum wire?

There are metal old work boxes, do a search on them.

Are they fabric insulated wires? Most pvc insulated (type tw) armored cable (bx) has a bonding strip (the aluminum wire). Bonding strips are required to use the jacket as a ground. Normally they are bent around the jacket before the connector, so to check for it, you may need to remove the connector or box.

If you dont have one, the jacket cannot be used for ground. But I would check a little more before deciding you dont have a bonding strip.

There is an aluminum wire from the bx to the outside of the box as best I can tell using a scope. I looked up the metal boxes and hopefully can find one locally before using the internet to order.

Look for something like this at your hardware store

Then pick up a box like this, then the metal bends around the box, holding it in place. But be sure to use a bx connector, not the clamps in the back. They are only rated for nm.
