I am wanting to add an outdoor outlet for my chicken coop. It is located right by our wellhead ( we are on well water). Would it be totally ghetto to branch off of the well power supply to add an outlet or is this ok? I think the most it would be powering would be a heat lamp. Thanks in advance?

What's feeding your well now? If it's funky old, maybe it's time to improve what you have and give the hens something to cluck about.

Many well pumps are straight 240 volt. You may not have a neutral.

It is fairly new(2002). I will open it up and see if there is a neutral and ground. Main concern with it is I am not sure if it is against the code.

Probably not as the controller for the pump is likely inside near the pressure tank and you will likely have power only when the system turns the pump on. In any event it's probably 240 volts with two hots and a ground.

If it does have both neutral and ground? I believe the power supply is at the top of the well head and goes straight to the breaker. Could I put a junction in at the top?

How far is the nearest outlet now? Seem like if all you are doing is running a heat lamp an extension cord would work too.

About 50 ft. I just don't want to have an extension across my driveway all winter.
