When running a new switch leg for a light do you have to use Conduit? Can you use a Flexible armor cable?

Go back and add your location. No way to even guess without knowing where you live.
Even then a call to your local building dept. would be the best way to find out for sure.
Greater Chicago

i live in the chicago area
You are probably looking at conduit. call the building department.
Chicago requires conduit for everything.

Really? That's the dumbest code rule

You can use up to 3 foot of MC. All the rest is conduit. For example, I have conduit run in the drop ceiling in my basement. For each pot light I use a small run of MC from a junction box to the light.

Just correct moi if I am wrong on this part but did they used have leeway on 6 foot on MC's ? and when that change on the ChEC ( Chicago Electric Code ) ?

Merci,
Marc
