I need to add an 'old work' junction box to my garage (behind a firewall). Does the box have to be metal, or will plastic be sufficient (pass a code inspection)?

the romex is run along the ceiling. My understanding is that conduit is not required unless exposed wire is below 7" from the ceiling. Does that sound right to you?

If the romex is surface mounted, why wouldn't you simply install a surface mounted box?

Whether its surface mounted or in the wall, is there a requirement on being a metal box? I was hoping to put the box in the wall and putting a putting some shelves over that part of the wall.

You can use plastic unless there are local codes stating otherwise. If I'm not mistaken, a 1G plastic box has a 1 HR fire rating.
