I need to add a 240 volt circuit for a new appliance. I know the basics and how to stay safe around electricity. I've added outlets and replaced breakers in the past.

The appliance needs 20 amps and a NEMA 6-30R plug.

The only 6-30R outlet that the hardware store had in stock was 30 amps.

So got a 2 pole 30 amp breaker and already have some nm-b 10-2 wire. Only need to go 20 ft and will use white neutral as the second hot wire.

Anyone see any holes in this plan?

It can't be both. A 6-30r needs to be on a 30 amp circuit. The circuit must match the receptacle when you get to 30 amps and above.
If the unit comes with a 6-30P plug then you need a 30 amp circuit.

Cool. That's what i ended buying. Plate lists 20amps but came with 6-30r.

Re-identify white in some way. Black tape is most common way.

Up here we usually use a red sheathed cable which has red/black/bare
conductors.
