My house was built in the 40's. The trim is big and chunky and has 85 layers of paint on it. I'm thinking about adding some crown moulding. Would brand new, perfectly clean, crisp moulding look funny next to the old stuff that has lost some of its definition over time?

It would look odd. I stripped all the moldings in our house. The molding that was damaged, I ordered a set of knives and re-created it. I wanted everything to look sharp and crisp. We had so many layers of paint that the beads were disappearing on some of the beadboard. Out house is 130 years old, we have a lot of large molding and baseboards.
