An HVAC contractor installed three new cold air returns. The previous existing ones are no longer connected to the furnace. I want to install blanking plates but my wife wants to leave things as they are. I think this is a mistake since dust from the crawl space will come up and enter the rooms through the grilles, all wall mounted.

Am I correct? Need some ammunition!

Seal them. Or have them reconnected. Leaving them open is one of the worse things you can do.
